Short Description

Short Description
The Commission for the Blind provides vocational rehabilitation and independent living services designed to enable people who are blind to become more participating and contributing members of society. The Vocational Rehabilitation program helps blind people become employed. The Independent Living/Older Blind program helps blind people live independently in their homes and communities. The Commission’s “Newsline for the Blind” program provides access to over thirty publications through a touchtone phone. The Commission also sponsors “NFB-Newsline,” which provides access to over 200 national newspapers, including several in Spanish. There are potential costs; these are determined during the intake meetings. Proof of income will be required to determine cost, and will generally be paid out-of-pocket or there is a possibility of grant funding going towards the individuals using the services offered. Eligible individuals are those with a diagnosis of a disability. If an individual is not yet diagnosed, but suspects they have a disability, an appointment for an evaluation can be scheduled with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.

Short Description
New Vistas is a Center for Independent Living and serves nine counties in northern New Mexico including Santa Fe, San Miguel, Mora, Colfax, Union, Harding, Taos, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties. Short Description
The New Mexico Commission for Deaf & Hard of Hearing provides effective leadership, education, advocacy and programs to reduce barriers to the social, economic, educational, cultural and intellectual well-being of Deaf and Hard of Hearing New Mexicans and their families, friends and colleagues. NMCDHH provides programs and services to over 250,000 people in New Mexico who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind, Hard of Hearing and Late-Deafened and their families, friends, agencies and organizations. Programs and services are categorized into three areas: communication access and development, telecommunications and technical assistance, and public policy and advocacy. Office hours: Monday – Friday 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
The Department of Community Advocacy provides advocacy and referrals for transition-related settings, as well as guidance on requesting and receiving accommodations. They also work with professionals from various districts, institutions and agencies to ensure that individuals are receiving appropriate services under federal law, and participate in a variety of transition groups and organizations focused on improving outcomes for post-secondary transition for individuals with disabilities.
